A Canadian woman was sentenced to seven years behind bars after posting a selfie on social media that shows her wearing the belt authorities believe she used to strangle her 18-year-old best friend.
Cheyenne Rose Antoine, now 21, said she doesn’t remember killing Brittney Gargol after a night of partying and drinking in 2015 but took responsibility for the crime during a court appearance on Monday, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix reported.

A passerby discovered 18-year-old Gargol strangled to death on the side of the road near a landfill in Saskatoon in March 2015. Police eventually arrested Antoine after spotting a selfie of the pair, taken hours before Gargol’s death.

The image sees Antoine sporting a belt matching one discovered near Gargol’s body. Authorities believe it was the murder weapon.

The night of Gargol’s death, Antoine posted a lengthy Facebook message inquiring on her whereabouts, which police believe was one of several bids to shake authorities, according to the Phoenix.

Antoine also reportedly lied to police, telling them she was with her friend the night she was killed but that she later went home to see her uncle. She also allegedly told authorities Gargol went home with an unidentified man after they spent most of the night barhopping.

Police were eventually tipped off by a friend, who told them Antoine turned up at her home drunk and confessed to killing Gargol after the pair got into an argument.

Antoine was arrested and charged with second-degree murder but pleaded to a lesser charge of manslaughter on Monday.

She said she could not remember what sparked the argument she had with Gargol and mourned the loss of her friend.

“She knows the family would like an explanation, a reason, but unfortunately she cannot provide that,” her lawyer, Lisa Watson, told the court.

Antoine, who did not directly address the court apologized for her crimes in a statement read by Watson.

“I will never forgive myself. Nothing I say or do will ever bring her back,” she said. “I am very, very sorry... It shouldn’t have ever happened.”

Sure thing fatty.
