A five-member South Korean expedition team and four Nepali guides were at the base camp of Mount Gurja in western Nepal when a snowstorm destroyed their camp.

Seventeen people have died in a dragon boat accident in southern China thought to have been caused by a strong current. One of the long, narrow boats packed with paddlers overturned on Saturday and another arriving at the scene also capsized. Almost sixty people were tipped into the water.

Five patients of Britain's NHS made 8,303 emergency calls in a year. The highest number came from a single patient, made to London's ambulance service, which was contacted 3,594 times. A spokesman said the calls were often related to mental health, chronic pain and alcohol or drug dependence.

China has announced a military budget of 1.11 trillion yuan, or $175bn, for the coming year. The figure, an 8% increase on last year, was announced by Prime Minister Li Keqiang as the annual meeting of parliament got under way in Beijing. Mr Li also set a target of 6.5% growth for the economy.

Two teenage boys were rescued by a brand new lifesaving drone in Australia while lifeguards were still training to use it. After being spotted struggling in heavy surf 700m (2,300ft) offshore, lifesavers sent the drone to drop an inflatable rescue pod, and the pair made their way safely to shore.
